The Nestos Delta is located on the southern border of the Prefectures of Kavala and Xanthi. Its beginning is placed at the exit of the river from the mountain mass, in Toxotes village and extends to the south, occupying a fairly large area of ​​550,000 acres. compose a mosaic that favors wildlife.

It is one of the most important wetlands in the country and in Europe, due to the extent and variety of its habitats. It is included in the List of Wetlands of International Importance according to the Ramsar Convention, it belongs to the Natura 2000 network as well as to the Special Protection Areas of Birds of the European Union. It is part of the National Park of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace that extends from the Nestos Delta to Lakes Vistonida and Ismarida.
