The straits of Nestos – Thracian Tempi, extend between the mountains of the southern part of the Rhodope Mountains. The river Nestos forms a route of 22 km. with continuous meanders where during its passage it seems to overcome the rocky environment, making its journey to the sea seem fearless.

The forest-aquatic ecosystem of Nestos is of international importance, is a national park, is protected by the international Ramsar treaty and is part of the Natura 2000 network. The area is included in the “Important Bird Areas of Greece” and the “Special Protection Areas”, in accordance with Community Directive 79/409.
